Muscle Fatigue and Recovery
• After prolonged activity, muscle contraction weakens, and the muscle enters a state of fatigue. • Fatigue results from in muscle cells, such as: • Inadequate release of calcium ions • Depletion of energy sources • Lack of oxygen • Build up of lactic acid other metabolic wastes. Lactic acid builds up when oxygen needed to completely oxidize pyruvic acid during aerobic respiration is not adequately supplied to the muscle cell. • After exercising, the cardiovascular system replenishes the level of oxygen, thereby promoting recovery. • Recovery: Replenishes oxygen and nutrient stores. • Converts lactic acid to pyruvic acid reducing acidity. • Repairs tissues.
