T cell receptors

• T cells are responsible for cell-mediated immunity. • Each T cell contains a unique form of T cell receptor (TCR) on its membrane. • These T cell receptors are produced through a process of genetic recombination which is able to produce millions of different variations. • Each T cell receptor binds to a specific foreign antigen, which has been processed and presented to it by another cell. • There are two types of T cells, those with the protein CD4 on their surface (CD4+) and those with CD8 on their surface (CD8+). • CD4 receptors are found on helper T cells while CD8 receptors are found on cytotoxic T cells. • CD4 and CD8 T cells are activated differently. They also play different roles in the immune system.
