Although most babies don't appear to have any teeth when they are born, they are in fact already well developed out of sight beneath the gum. The first molars erupt at about 12-14 months. The canines follow at about 16-18 months . By 3 years old, the second molars have usually erupted, completing the set of 20 baby teeth. At 4 years old, children usually have all 20 baby teeth. The different stages of tooth development can help you to guess how old someone is. At 5 years old, children usually still have all 20 of their baby teeth, although some may start to become wobbly and fall out as the adult teeth grow into the mouth. Baby teeth are generally smaller and whiter than adult teeth. From about 6 years old, the first adult teeth, the permanent molars, erupt at the back of the baby teeth. No baby teeth need to be lost before these important first permanent molars erupt. The adult lower incisors erupt between 6 and 7 years old. It is important to look after your adult teeth so that they will stay with you permanently throughout your life. The adult upper incisors erupt between 7 and 8 years The lower adult canines erupt between the ages of 9 and 10 The premolars erupt between 9 and 12 years old. The second adult molars erupt between 11 and 13 years old. The third molars or wisdom teeth may erupt between the ages of 17 and 21 years old. Not everyone will get wisdom teeth so don't worry if you don't!
