• The primary function of the nervous system is to provide rapid communication within the body to maintain homeostasis. • This function underlies behaviors, thinking and control of organ functions. • The basic functions of the nervous system are provided by: • Sensory neurons • Association neurons • Motor neurons • Many sensory neurons detect stimuli, such as heart rate or body temperature. • Sensory neurons also carry information into the spinal cord and brain. • Association neurons receive sensory information, process that information and then decide how to respond. • Motor neurons respond to the association neuron's decision by altering the action of effector cells or organs. System organization -PNS vs CNS • The nervous system is structurally divided into two subsystems: • Central nervous system (CNS) • Peripheral nervous system (PNS) • Neurons in the CNS: • Integrate sensory information • Provide the source of memories and thoughts • Originate all decisions to stimulate muscle and gland effector cells. • Neurons in the PNS include: • Receptors and sensory neurons • Motor neurons
