But the life cycles of plants and animals differ in their details. In animals, a multicelled diploid stage gives rise to single-celled haploid gametes, the eggs and sperm. These gametes combine at fertilization to form a diploid zygote, which grows and develops into a new multicelled animal. In plants, both the haploid and diploid phases of the life cycle include multicelled forms. Meiosis in a diploid sporophyte, such as a pine tree, produces haploid spores. The spores give rise to multicelled haploid gametophytes, which produce gametes. Gametes combine at fertilization to form a zygote, which grows and develops into a new sporophyte.
